RIOJA VEGA was established in 1882, is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja. Actually, there are just 4 wineries (Rioja Alta, Rioja Bordon, Rioja Santiago and RIOJA VEGA) out of over 600 in the region, who can use RIOJA on the brand name because it was found it before the Consejo Regulador.
It was built in Haro – Barrio de la Estaciónby Don Felipe Ugalde and after nearly 60 years in the same location and 3 generations it was moved by new ownes Family Muerza firstly to a place called San Adrian under the name of Bodegas Muerza. In 1983 it was taken over by Principe de Viana Group, invested in vineyards and replant some of the old vines back to the 80´s and 90´s. In 2.000 we built the new RIOJA VEGA in Viana
We have got 70 hectares of vineyard surrending the cellar, mainly Tempranillo but also Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. In regards of White grapes we work with small producers from our area who originaly gave us the best Viura and now also Tempanill Blanco grapes in the region. We work closely with them in a long term business relationship as a win win agreement. We pay them a bit more than our competitors to get the best quality grapes.
