Bremerton received outstanding ratings in Hallidays 2008 Wine Companion. Rated a 5 Star winery with 8 of their wines being awarded 90 points or above. is Australia's only family winery run by two sisters (Rebecca Willson, Winemaker and Lucy Willson, Marketing Manager).
Bremerton Wines is a family run winery located in Langhorne Creek, South Australia, bought by the Wilson family in 1985. It took several years to renovate the existing barn and various other buildings on the estate, eventually planting the first grape vines in 1992. Unfortunately, this was pretty bad timing as in December of that year one of the largest, most significant and devastating floods on record struck, destroying some of the vines and damaging a lot of property. In 1994 the first wines - a pair of whites - were released.
Those formative years were defining for Bremerton Wines. They led to expansion beyond the then current property lines and investment into a massive winery which could process over 500 tonnes of grapes, allowing them to significantly increase production as well as providing contract wine making for small growers. And thus Matilda Plains was born.
Langhorne as a region is quite unique in that during winter it benefits from minor flooding of Bremer and Angus rivers providing the vineyards with much needed water and a wash of rich nutrients from the soil deposited. By giving the vines a big drink, the water sets the vine up well for the growing season ahead allowing it to develop a full canopy of strong leaves. It sees little rain after that, enjoying the warmth and a bit of ocean breeze.
