About the Producer

Formed in 1945 through the coming together of 2 families with viticultural heritage dating back to the 16th Century, Dopff & Irion is one of the most highly regarded estates in Alsace. Rene Dopff is credited as a key figure in modernizing the region of Alsace in the 20th Century and putting it on the viticultural map through reducing yields, creating the now classic labels and recognising the importance of matching a grape variety with the correct soil and terroir.
They own 22 hectares of vineyards which is a fair chunk for this region where they average holding is under 1 hectare, many of which are Grand Cru sites. The estate is now owned by the Pfaffenheim Co-operative and utilises its ultra-modern wine making facilities in producing top quality, mineral driven wines that are suitable for long aging.
The tasting room is on its original site in the historic and charming village of Riquewihr, widely thought of as one the prettiest villages in France with beautiful scenery and chocolate box houses.
Riesling is King in Alsace and their Château de Riquewihr Riesling Grand Cru Schoenenbourg A.O.C. Alsace Grand Cru is a text book example of a top quality one. From the Gypsum rich soil of the Schoenenbourg slopes it is an intense and complex wine with layers of flavour that will develop for decades.
