Description
The best red wine I have ever tried from Germany (Richard). A really appealing delicate Pinot Noir showing bright crunchy cranberry fruit flavour, with some savoury earthiness. Also aromas of bright strawberry fruit with a touch of light spice. Pure red berry and bramble fruit characters on the palate and balancing juicy acidity, backed by supple tannins. The wine is bottled without fining, and with only minimal filtration.
Situated in the Pfalz region near Stuttgart, they are a second generation family producer farming on varied soil including the unique ‘muschelkalk’ – a calcareous soil with substantial deposits of fossilised mussel shells. They are fully organic, and soon to be certified Biodynamic – for those who don’t know this a very minimal intervention way of farming pioneered by Rudolph Steiner. It includes looking at the lunar cycles to decide harvest dates and other pseudo science including burying cow horns full of ash at the end of the vines. Long story short, if you are that crazy about your grapes you are going to be more astute about noticing things like disease on the vines, and you will produce a better quality and purity of fruit.
